The threat posed by Daesh (the so-called Islamic State) has been persistent and making headlines for the past two years. The phenomenon has turned Syria into a multinational battlefield and has been the primary cause of the refugee crisis. Syria’s neighbouring countries have therefore become strategically significant for all attempts at defeating Daesh or resolving the refugee crisis. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is of particular importance and its Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh will be present at GLOBSEC Bratislava Global Security Forum.

GLOBSEC has entered its second decade of existence and it will be honoured by the presence of Nasser Judeh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Jordan as a crucial geopolitical player shares borders with Syria and has played an active role in the fight against Daesh and Jihadism in general. Its territory has been used to launch drone attacks against Daesh and the Kingdom has accepted hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. As Jordanian officials claim, the country has received even more refugees than Turkey, when measuring proportionally to the population of Jordan.

Mr Judeh’s keynote speech at GLOBSEC 2016 will thus be of crucial importance as the situation in the Middle East is perhaps one of the most serious security challenges of today. “We greatly value the presence of His Excellency Nasser Judeh. In these times, it is vital that Europe and the transatlantic area cooperate with Middle Eastern partners,” says GLOBSEC founder Róbert Vass.

GLOBSEC 2016 takes place on 15 – 17 April in Bratislava and its main panels are to revolve around the hottest security issues of today – the refugee crisis, the Middle East situation and the relations with Russia. Other distinguished guests of the conference include German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Military Committee Chairman Petr Pavel, or Presidents of Croatia, Bulgaria and Macedonia and Slovakia. GLOBSEC 2016 will welcome more than a thousand participants from 75 countries.
